‘Rose，mydear！’saidtheelderlady。

Rosemadenoreply，butplayedalittlequicker，asthoughthewordshadrousedherfromsomepainfulthoughts。

Oliverhastenedtocomplywithherrequest。Theyounglady，makinganefforttorecoverhercheerfulness，strovetoplaysomeliveliertune；butherfingersdroppedpowerlessoverthekeys。Coveringherfacewithherhands，shesankuponasofa，andgaveventtothetearswhichshewasnowunabletorepress。

‘Mychild！’saidtheelderlylady，foldingherarmsabouther，‘Ineversawyousobefore。’

‘IwouldnotalarmyouifIcouldavoidit，’rejoinedRose；‘butindeedIhavetriedveryhard，andcannothelpthis。IfearI_am_ill，aunt。’
